1. THE HIKING

McConnells Mill State Park is home to the spectacular Slippery Rock Creek Gorge, a National Natural Landmark. Built in 1852, McConnells Mill is named for the mill that is located in the heart of the park. The pet-friendly hiking trails feature views of the forest, Slippery Rock Creek and many large boulders and waterfalls.

For a rather easy hike, take the Alpha Pass and Kildoo Trails. You’ll stroll past the historic mill and circa 1876 covered red bridge—the largest Howe-style truss bridge in Pennsylvania.

2. THE ART

The Mattress Factory is a contemporary art museum and experimental lab featuring site-specific installations created by artists in residence from around the world. Most of the exhibits are interactive—experience “Repetitive Vision” and “Infinity Dots Mirrored Room” by Yayoi Kusama, as well as “Damn Everything But the Circus” by Benjamin Sota, which has actual circus equipment to play on.

3. THE COCKTAILS

4. THE GARDENS

Discover a green oasis in the middle of Pittsburgh’s vibrant Oakland neighborhood. Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens has provided a world-class experience since 1893. Since the blockbuster debut of Chihuly at Phipps: Gardens and Glass in 2007, the gardens of Phipps have become a premiere home for glass art exhibitions.

Encompassing 15 acres, you’ll find a 14-room glasshouse and 23 distinct gardens, industry-leading sustainable architecture and green practices, seasonal flower shows, plus renowned orchid and bonsai collections.

5. THE HISTORY

At the Heinz History Center, experience ketchup in all its glory. Experience 150 years of the H.J. Heinz Company starting with the larger-than-life, 11-foot ketchup bottle comprised of more than 400 individual bottles alongside a display of more than 100 historic bottles that shows the evolution of Heinz products and packaging.
