5 REASONS TO VISIT CALGARY

5 REASONS TO VISIT CALGARY

Historically nicknamed “Cowtown” because of its Wild West roots, Calgary sits in the sunny eastern foothills of Canada's Rocky Mountains. The young, vibrant and ever so cosmopolitan city is full of community spirit and was recently chosen as the cleanest city in the world by Forbes.

1. THE HIKING

To truly experience nature in the city, look no further than Nose Hill Park. The hill most likely gets its name from the fact that, from certain locations and with a little imagination, you guessed it—looks like a nose. The park contains one of the most significant examples of Rough Fescue grassland ecosystem left on the Canadian prairies. From the plateau, there are vistas including the Rocky Mountains, Bow River Valley and the vast plains to the east.

Ancient rivers, successive glaciers and their run-off have eroded the landscape producing the surrounding valleys and lowlands, leaving the two hills towering over the valley. Because of its height, the hill was a sacred place used for ceremonies and burials, while the park contains significant archaeological sites, including stone circles. Deer and coyotes can be seen roaming the grasslands and coulees. Nose Hill Park has numerous hiking trails ranging from 2.9 to 6 miles and is also pet-friendly. Not in the mood for a hike?

You can still get the view. Located 191 meters (627 feet) above the downtown core, Calgary Tower offers a spectacular 360° view of the bustling city and the majestic Rocky Mountains from the observation deck. Stand on the see-through glass floor for a bird’s-eye view of the city streets below.

2. THE ART

One of the largest museums in western Canada, Glenbow showcases a deep connection between art and culture. The museum provides a sense of place while respecting the legacy of the people and events that helped form the community through over a million cultural artifacts and artworks.

The GMC Rangeland Derby is a Stampede original, with 36 teams of horses and drivers racing to the finish line each night.

The Calgary Stampede is also one of Canada’s largest music festivals, with five stages and 300 performers, including a slate of international music headliners. The excitement is capped off nightly with the Bell Grandstand Show and a fireworks finale that lights up the sky for all 10 nights.
